I would give this book a zero star review if I could. Based on the description of the book, I broke precedent and bought it in hard back. Big mistake and even bigger disappointment. I have read all of the Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers books and enjoyed every one of them -- until this one. I really wonder if Sandford actually read the book after he outsourced it. If he did, he should have junked it and then rewritten the book himself. If not -- he should be ashamed of himself to let such a piece of tripe be published with his name on it.
Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers are both interesting characters and Sandford has developed them further with each book so that the reader looks forward both to seeing how Davenport and Flowers have grown as well as to his plotting and story telling, both of which are gripping. Until this book. The whole Israeli business was so badly handled, it was actually offensive as well as ludicrous. Sandford's collaborator did not do even her basic research. Virgil is a pale and blurred copy of his usual colorful, ebullient self. It appears that Sandford provided his collaborator with a list of Virgil's personality characteristics. Old band teeshirts - check. Fishing - check. Boat - check. Talking to himself during the night about spiritual matters - check. "That f--ing Flowers" -- check. And so on. The plotting itself was absurd and required more than a suspension of disbelief. I will say, though, that the collaborator's writing was consistent -- consistently horrible.

I hate to say this because I have always loved John Sandford books but this book is just awful. It makes no sense and is so boring. I read the first half and then I couldn't take it anymore and I just started skipping through the last pages and it didn't get any better. The plot if you can call it a plot was so confusing and the names all ran together. The thoughts of Virgil with a middle aged woman with five kids stretched my imagination also. If you want an exciting mystery book, skip this one or reread one of the earlier Sandford books.
I don't know what happened with this book. I normally love John Sanford. The characters are not well thought out and we are taken on a journey without any point through ridiculous story lines. Israelis, Egyptians and Hezbollah come to Minnesota to find an antiquity that never would have been allowed out of the country where it was found. A piece of a rock with part of a message that could change history and religion as it is today is smuggled by a dying man out of the country. International forces are working with a down-home detective and cast of characters including farmers, students, politicians, murderers and cops who don't even bother to verify the existence or veracity of the prize they are seeking but somehow feel it is worth $3 million. It's just hide and go seek over and over by a cast of thousands. I could go on but suffice it say that none of the characters are developed and the story line rushes to its nonsensical conclusion.
The seventh entry in the Virgil Flowers series suffers from many sophomoric errors. I hope this is because Sandford, an excellent writer, chose to co-author this book with his partner. I also hope he does not plan to do so again. The bare bones of the plot are okay a Minnesota minister and archaeology buff steals an artifact from a dig in Israel, presumably to sell it. An Israeli investigator comes here to retrieve it. And Virgil, son of a minister, is on the case. The sophomoric errors appear everywhere. Characters are caricatures. Dialog devolves into one-liners. People who ought to be genuinely angry or frightened make inappropriate jokes. I couldn't tell how much of the book was written by Sandford and how much by his partner, but perhaps their relationship interfered with his ability to rein in her errors. Having read all his books, I know that he normally does NOT make these kinds of mistakes. If you're following the Virgil Flowers series, you may want to read this, and it's mildly entertaining, but it's also a shadow of the best in the series.
The lot of the thriller writer is challenging. If you're writing an ongoing series, how do you keep creating fresh new stories that readers will find engaging? Take, for example, Virgil Flowers of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Virgil is forced to carry out his investigations in a single American state. So, how can you work in Israeli agents, Turkish thugs, and an ancient artifact? Well, John Sandford found a way. You'll see it all spelled out in Storm Front, the seventh in the delightful series of Virgil Flowers detective novels.

The pleasures of reading the Virgil Flowers books are many. They're cracking good stories, for one. The dialogue sparkles and is often hilarious. The characters are typically off-key and intriguing to a fault. Including Virgil himself, of course. Where else would you find a top-flight detective who is a fisherman and hunter, hates guns, has a successful side career as a magazine writer, and beds a beautiful woman in every novel?

OK, so the story in Storm Front is unlikely at best. An aging Lutheran pastor from Mankato is dying of cancer. On an archaeological dig in Israel, he steals a car and spirits off a valuable ancient artifact and heads back to Minnesota. He is pursued by an agent from the Israeli Antiquities Authority and a pair of Turkish thugs whose motives are entirely unclear. In fact, it will be a challenge for Virgil to uncover everyone's motives in this unusual and exceedingly puzzling case. Of course, he will do so in short order, because Virgil always gets his "man." And you'll want to keep an eye on that Israeli agent, who is, naturally, a beautiful woman.

Storm Front is not the best novel in the Virgil Flowers series, but it's a delight nonetheless.
