A true episodic sequel, James A. Moore begins The Blasted Lands where Seven Forges ends, and only manages to write a more compelling version of the Sa'ba Taalor in the process by removing the veil and sending us deep into the heart of their mysterious culture with once disgraced now embraced Andover Lashk and his magnificent character arc. The mountainous Tusk grabs the cover of this one, with Drask the last and Swech the next, but again its the enigmatic Sa'ba Taalor as a whole who make this book part mystery part exploration adventure, and whilst they are presented to be the villains to de facto protagonist Merros Dulver's Kingdom of Fellein and their newly appointed monarch, I cannot see why the Sa'ba Taalor are not the heroes of this story, and perhaps Moore's commentary on decadent opulence being a breeding ground for evil hearts and minds contrasting with hard and humbling lands cultivating pragmatism and excellence is a subliminal one, but readily apparent nonetheless. City of Wonders promises great things, but Moore's meandering sense of plot-related magnitude makes me think there's no true end to this tale unless he wants there to be.

The second installment definitely did not disappoint. Still more twists and turns. Onto the third book and the next level of great reading
I really enjoyed book 1 in this series (The Seven Forges) but this 2nd book was just filler between books 1 and 3. Nothing really happens. It's just a set up for the next book and for that reason it was disappointing. Yes, I'll purchase the 3rd book because the first one was so good--but I wish this 2nd book in the series would have been more eventful. I believe that a reader could skip book two and go directly to the third book and not really miss much.
Having said that, I do really like the concept of the series. The author writes well, the characters are all interesting, and I really do want to know what happens next.
The Blasted Lands tells a decent story in a simple, extremely accessible manner. Like the first book, it's poorly edited and contains many misspellings, incorrect word choices, and other mistakes. But, all in all, it's a decent read if you're not looking for anything too sophisticated or deep. I doubt if I'll read any more of Mr. Moore's books, I just can't live on a diet of popcorn.
This book sort of reminds me of after the nuclear holocaust with a mutant race having evolved but with a twist of new god like beings that can bestow gifts upon people that follow a given path. Now these mutant people want to conquer the race of less physically developed people. Well, I won't give it all away but there are many surprises and twists and turns, not to mention creatures that kill and are extremely hard to kill. Fast moving and exciting to read.
James Moore is an excellent author and needs to be on any fantasy fans shelf. The way his religious aspects are almost his magic system is quite intriguing in my eyes. (They also have real magic so no worries that's due to sorcerers. That was not a spoiler you meet that character in the first book.) All in all a great book and a must read if your trying to fill a game of thrones sized hole.
Imagine, your world was birthed on the destruction of your 'enemy' b/c of your lousy rulers' choices...

At some point their sins will catch up with you.

There is no good / bad, protagonist/ antagonist in this story...so far it's let the fittest survive.

You love the perceived 'bad guys' as much as you want the perceived 'good guys' to prevail.

My view...some times the 'good guys' don't deserve it. Or simply just can't do it.

It's like a tank against a horse.
James A. Moore strikes again with The Blasted Lands. This sequel to The Seven Forges picks up directly where the previous novel left off.

The strength of this novel is its characters. They all feel real even though they populate a "grimdark" fantasy world. They exist in politics, in alliance forging, in war, in sorcery, in soul searching. We see all sides of the conflicts.

The plotting is no slouch, either. The players more through a swirl of intrigue and action. The tension ratchets up throughout the story right to the cliffhanger conclusion. The story is even larger and grander than its prequel.

I can't wait for City of Wonders!
