I felt so much while reading this book. I was transported there, feeling what they felt, seeing what they saw. It really touched me in many ways, maybe because we all have these people in our lives in some way. I read ALL THE TIME and few books stay in my head like this one has. I actually cried feeling their pain and mine. I could feel my grandparents around me and it made me think and remember all the little things that are really important. Thank you for that.
An unsettling look into fictional characters we all know in real life. I love the way Mrs. Austin gives us a peek into the minor characters in her story, some sad, some scary. An ending I didn't expect. Loved it.
I usually go for suspenseful stories about zombies or horrible plagues that are too horrible to ever happen but a friend recommended this book. It was well written and easy to read but at the same time, NOT very easy to read because of the story content. It takes a close look at details of relationships that can be a little disturbing. Some people just scratch the surface of getting to know what other human beings are experiencing. This book gives a bitter but true taste of what it is like to grow old and how impatient the younger generation can be. I am currently in the process of having my mother move in with me. Before I dive into that adventure, it is very important to reevaluate some relationships and remember who the person is inside my aging mother's body. I'm not sure what the author's intention was in writing this story but kudos to her for sharing a perspective that may enlighten the younger generation of today.
Intelligent and intense best describe this story. Mrs. Austin delivers an intriguing cast of intricate characters, with as many layers as a Vidalia onion. This is a very realistic look into the complexities of everyday life, spanning three generations of women within the same family. Different, yet made of the same thread. Relatable- you've either been there or know someone like that. Was a bit surprised by the ending. I would recommend this book as a must-read, from teenagers to adults. I am looking forward to Mrs. Austin's next book!
